HP Touchpad Meets With An Untimely End

HP TouchPad, which hit the shelves just seven weeks ago, is being put out of production due to low sales. The tablet worked on WebOS developed by Hewlett-Packard Co. The end of this gadget is seen to an assertion of the fact that the tablets of Apple are still the most saleable products in the electronic market. Weak sales were also the reason for Dell Steak 5 to go out of business a little while back. Mark Gerber, who is an analyst with Detwiler Fenton, a research and investment firm based in Boston, said that tablets which are not from the house of Apple have failed to generate retail sales. He said that the failure of HP TouchPad is a clear indication of Apple’s supremacy in the tablet market.

In addition to TouchPad and Dell Steak 5, Eee Pad Transformer from Asutek Computer and Motorola Xoom have failed to show decent sales in the recent times. The only other tablet that is surviving in the market despite slow sales and discouraging reviews is RIM’s PlayBook. RIM has had a streak of failures with BlackBerry experiencing a very slack response from customers. PlayBook is seen as an important product for RIM and it is very unlikely that the tablet will be pulled back from the shelves anytime soon. Apple’s operating system iOS is the largest selling software in the tablet market and has recorded sales figures that capture 61/3% of the market, followed by Android, which registered a sale of 30.1%. Microsoft’s Windows 7 phone operating system recorded a very low sale of 4.6% while RIM trailed at 3.3% sales.

While there does exist a huge void in the tablet industry, the vacuum could soon be filled by Google. Google stunned the world a few days ago by signing a 12.6 billion takeover deal with Motorola. With plans now to purchase the manufacturing facility of Motorola Mobility, people can expect a tablet that is powerful and can beat Apple tablets. Google is about to bring out its Ice Cream Sandwich system, which is supposed to be around breaking creation. As of now, the operating systems used for smart phone and tablets are different. Ice Cream Sandwich aims at integrating the two operating systems. This will make the operating system more comprehensive in terms of usability and development of apps. In addition to Google, Microsoft is also gearing up to bring out its new software Windows 8 for tablets. Sony is another company that is expected to come out with its tablets soon.
